That is the reality in the Atlas Copco L8 Surface Drilling rig training simulator. Together with Atlas Copco we have developed this  training simulator for which is a part of Atlas Copco three step training program
"Atlas Copco Master Driller". Read more about why you should use simulators here.

Training program

The training program includes twelve exercises, from basic maneuvering to more advanced tasks. Training
Step-by-step the severity increases, ensuring that the operator knows the basic before facing more difficult exercises.

The learning objectives are mainly how to operate and maneuver the machine, but also different pre-start routines and safety manners.
For example, when tramming in extreme conditions, it is important to use the boom as counter weight to adjust the centre of gravity. It is also important to know maximum allowed tilting angles in all directions.

Hardware setup

Hardware setup

The simulator has a complete L8 cabin, with full functionality. Three of the cabins windows - windshield, right window and skylight - have been replaced by a multiple screen system, creating an immersive experience. There is also a large audience screen included, enabling the possibility to instruct other students in the same time. The simulator also adding another sense, since the cabin is mounted on a motion platform, recreating all movements and leanings that are simulated. The electric motion platform offers 19 degrees role and pitch, more than enough to create an authentic feeling. This is a very important feature, since a machine operators often relay in "the feeling".
